Job Summary
The Karim laboratory at the University of Southern Mississippi is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled postdoctoral fellow to join our team studying Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) - a tick bite-induced meat allergy with growing public health significance.
Our research uses functional genomics tools to investigate the role of tick saliva components in triggering AGS. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic academic environment committed to professional growth and supporting diverse career trajectories in biomedical research. This is a restricted position with no set end date, and continued employment depends on project need, funding availability, and performance.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
+ Work closely with PI and the research team to plan, design, and execute scientific research.
+ Perform experiments using appropriate molecular tools to study the tick bite-induced meat allergy.
+ Maintain tick colonies in the laboratory.
+ Maintain detailed laboratory notebook and data records.
+ Writing manuscripts, grants, and abstracts.
+ Write and edit drafts of manuscripts for publication.
+ Write/contribute data for extramural grant proposals.
+ Write abstracts of research and present them at scientific conferences.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. or DVM/PhD
Experience in working with ticks and animal models.
Strong background in entomology, computational biology, molecular biology, and immunology.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
+ Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
+ Excellent written and communication skills.
+ Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
+ Ability to work independently.
+ Ability to process information logically.
+ Skill in managing one's own time.
+ Candidates are expected to be very motivated for career development, committed to driving. federally funded high-impact and high-quality research and committed to aggressively pursuing postdoctoral grants.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with Amblyomma ticks and cultivating Rickettsia parkeri in tick cell culture.
Understanding of functional genomics approaches.
Working knowledge of tick biology, host immunology, and transcriptomic analysis.
