Job Title: School Nurse
Reports To: (Lead Nurse and Building Principal)
Terms of Employment: At Will Agreement
MAJOR FUNCTIONS:
The school nurse is a professional with specialized practice in the school setting. It is a multi-faceted role that requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practices along with a specialized component that promotes the health, well-being, academic achievement, and success of the school-aged student.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide school health education and instruction for students
Encourage good nutrition
Define & implement emergency care for accidents
Implement emergency care for illness
Document student encounters
Perform health assessments
Provide health counseling
Administer medication
Identify and manage chronic health problems
Recognize and support abused adolescents
Assess and facilitate special education needs
Promote dropout prevention programs
Obtains a health history
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Provide direct nursing care that includes the ongoing management of students with chronic health conditions, administering/supervising medications and monitoring side effects, health assessments, providing health counseling, skilled nursing functions, and administering the appropriate level of first aid as needed.
OTHER PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Utilizes current Mississippi School Nurse Procedures & Standards of Care Manual working as the traditional school nurse
Work within the scope of practice as defined by the Mississippi Nurse Practice Act
Follows Madison County Schools Board Policies
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Current Mississippi Board of Nursing License (Registered Nurse) with no restrictions
Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred)
Current Certification in CPR/AED/FIRST AID
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the nursing profession preferred
Prior school nurse experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE BASE:
Principles and practices underlying professional nursing
Principles and practices underlying the special field of school health
Current trends in nursing and literature in the field of school health
Organization and administration of other cooperating agencies
State and local laws relating to health and social issues
ABILITIES:
Participate cooperatively in the MCS nurse program
Exercise professional judgment in decision making
Utilize appropriate communication techniques with students and school personnel
Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs
Provide professional development and education to teachers as appropriate
MISSION AND GOALS:
The school nurse’s mission is to support the policies and procedures of Madison County Schools and to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy choices that promote healthy lifestyles. The school nurse should model a lifestyle of healthy eating patterns and moderate physical activity as a valuable part of their daily lives.
Works with the Principal to articulate and promote the school system’s vision of learning and teaching
Works under MCS Nurse Coordinator and follows policy and procedures that would support the health and wellness of the district and local school.
Monitors and evaluates progress toward the accomplishments of MCS goals and objectives
Develops goals, objectives, programs, and operations that are consistent with the school system’s vision, mission, and goals
Communicates high expectations of students, staff, and parents/guardians
Creates, identifies, encourages, and supports innovative ideas that support learning and teaching throughout each of the schools
Develops personal learning goals/plans to evaluate progress
Studies and follows district policies applicable to the operation of MCS as established by the Board of Education
