Assistant Principal, Elementary Middle School (PreK – 8 Grade)
JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Principal supports the Principal in leading a high-performing PreK–8 school by ensuring strong instruction, a positive school culture, and effective school operations. This role is critical in developing foundational literacy and numeracy in early grades while ensuring middle-grade readiness for high school success.
In a rural setting, the Assistant Principal serves as a visible, hands-on leader who builds strong relationships with students, staff, families, and the community, ensuring all students have access to high-quality learning experiences.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree or higher in Educational Administration
Valid state certification 486 Career Level Administrator
Minimum of 3–5 years of successful teaching experience (elementary and/or middle grades preferred).
Demonstrated leadership experience (instructional coach, lead teacher, department chair, etc.).
Demonstrated success in achieving high levels of student proficiency and/or growth, with the ability to implement and scale effective instructional practices.
Experience in diverse or rural school settings preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Strong understanding of child development from early childhood through adolescence.
Expertise in early literacy and foundational math practices.
Ability to analyze data and lead school improvement efforts.
Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of MTSS, PBIS, and special education processes.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and serve in a variety of leadership roles.
SALARY:
This position will be paid according to the Hinds County School District salary scale.
SUPERVISES:
Supervisory responsibilities may vary based on school needs and may include both instructional and non-instructional staff.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned, including but not limited to:
Instructional Leadership (PreK–8 Focus)
Support high-quality instruction aligned with state standards, with emphasis on early literacy, numeracy, and middle-grade rigor
Conduct classroom observations and provide timely, actionable feedback to teachers
Assist in monitoring student achievement data (including early childhood readiness, reading proficiency, and middle-grade benchmarks)
Support intervention and enrichment programs across all grade levels
Lead or support Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and teacher development
School Culture and Climate
Promote a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for young learners and adolescents
Support implementation of behavior systems, PBIS, and restorative practices
Build strong relationships with students to support engagement, attendance, and positive behavior
Support social-emotional learning and character development programs
Student Services and Whole-Child Support
Collaborate with counselors, interventionists, and special education staff to support diverse learners
Support MTSS implementation across academic and behavioral tiers
Monitor attendance and implement strategies to reduce chronic absenteeism
Participate in IEP, 504, and student support meetings
Operations and School Management
Assist with daily school operations including arrival/dismissal, supervision, scheduling, and safety procedures
Support development of the master schedule (PreK–8 alignment)
Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal policies
Assist in emergency preparedness and school safety planning
Support coordination of transportation and cafeteria operations common in rural settings
Family and Community Engagement
Build strong partnerships with families through consistent communication and outreach
Engage community stakeholders to support school programs and student success
Support family events, parent workshops, and engagement initiatives
Represent the school in community activities and events
Staff Supervision and Development
Assist in supervising and evaluating certified and classified staff
Support teacher coaching, mentoring, and professional growth
Assist in recruitment and retention of high-quality staff
Promote a collaborative, student-centered professional culture
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Up to 238 days annually with salary in accordance with the Administrative Salary Schedule as approved by the Board of Trustees.
