Job Title:

Department Business Administrator - Anesthesiology

Job Summary:

The Department Business Administrator (DBA) is the senior administrative staff member in a School of Medicine (SOM) department. This role is responsible for planning and organizing the department’s financial affairs and for administering its clinical*, educational and research programs. In collaboration with the Chair of the department, the DBA sets goals and objectives for the department and manages its relationship with the schools, affiliated hospitals and health system, and other external entities. The DBA directs the department’s financial planning and accounting practices, maintains financial management reporting and control systems, monitors departmental expenditures, oversees compliance with policies, procedures and regulations, and assures a high-functioning operational infrastructure to support the department’s clinical, educational and research missions.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, health sciences, or health care administration. Five (5) years financial/business management experience including two (2) years of leadership experience.

 

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: N/A

 

Preferred Qualifications: Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) from Healthcare Financial Management Association, American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE) from Medical Management Association, or active state Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, or similar certification. Prior experience in an academic medical center or large group experience with knowledge of teaching, research, and clinical practice operations.

Responsibilities

 

Financial and Revenue Management - Provides fiscal leadership through budget development, financial forecasting, and revenue optimization to ensure sustainable departmental operations.

 

Strategic Planning and Goal Setting - Leads the creation and execution of strategic plans and performance goals aligned with institutional objectives across clinical, academic, and research missions.

 

Personnel Management and Staff Development - Oversees organizational design, staffing, performance management, and professional development to support a high-performing, equitable workforce.

 

Physician Recruitment and Compensation Plan Development - Collaborates on physician recruitment and develops compensation structures that support institutional strategy and compliance standards.

 

Clinical Operations and Ambulatory Initiatives - Partners with health system leadership to enhance operational efficiency, patient access, and financial performance across clinical programs.

 

Research Contracts and Grants Management - Directs pre- and post-award grant administration, ensuring regulatory compliance, financial integrity, and support for faculty research activities.

 

Educational Program Administration - Manages resources, accreditation, and compliance for medical education programs, including residencies, fellowships, and student training.

 

Legal Services and Regulatory Compliance - Serves as departmental liaison for legal and compliance matters, ensuring adherence to institutional, state, and federal regulations.

 

Facilities and Information Systems Management - Oversees space planning, facility operations, and IT system functionality to support departmental goals and regulatory standards.
