SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION COUNSELOR
CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK
The Substance Abuse Prevention/Counselor position provides direct services to consumers under the supervision of the Substance Abuse Coordinator.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains documentation as evidence that all duties are completed in accordance with program requirements contained in the Mississippi Department of Mental Health Operational Standards.
- Maintains proper training, continuing education, qualifications, and other certifications required for this position as written in the Mississippi Department of Mental Health Operational Standards.
- Performs A&D assessment interviews with responsibility for seeing that proper routing of consumers and records are performed.
- Responsible for development and implementation of treatment plans.
- Provides prevention and education services to consumers in line with established treatment plans.
- Makes school and home visits as necessary.
- Participates in clinical staff meetings.
- Provided immediate emergency crisis intervention services.
- Accepts appropriate referrals from agencies and individuals for substance abuse services.
- Assists in providing and implementing consultation and education services as directed by the Substance Abuse Coordinator
- Engages in continuing education by attending workshops, seminars and other professional meetings.
- Provide a minimum of one-hundred twenty (120) hours per month of direct services to consumers.
- All other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in mental health related field. Must have a valid Mississippi driver’s license, valid vehicle insurance and use of an automobile to travel within the catchment area. Must pass a criminal background investigation.
