Job Title: Nursing Coordinator/School Nurse
Reports To: Assistant Superintendent/School Principal

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Nursing Coordinator will oversee and coordinate the district’s school health services program, ensuring compliance with Mississippi law and Department of Education guidelines. This position provides leadership for all school nurses, develops district-wide health protocols, manages student health services, and serves as the primary liaison among administrators, parents, health agencies, and the Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Healthy Schools.
The school nurse is a professional with specialized practice in the school setting. It is a multi-faceted role that requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practices along with a specialized component that promotes the health, well-being, academic achievement, and success of the school-aged student.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Nursing Coordinator):
Supervise, support, and evaluate school nurses across all district campuses.
Develop, implement, and update district health services policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Provide guidance to school nurses on appropriate health screenings to ensure follow-up referrals.
Ensure compliance with immunization laws, medication administration regulations, and chronic health condition management (asthma, diabetes, seizures, allergies).
Provide professional development, training, and guidance for school nurses and staff on health emergencies, CPR, first aid, and chronic condition care.
Maintain accurate health records and oversee district health data reporting requirements.
Act as district liaison to local health departments, hospitals, and community agencies.
Advise administrators on health issues that impact student attendance, performance, or school operations.
Manage health services budget, supplies, and emergency equipment across schools.
Lead the district’s response to public health concerns (epidemics, communicable disease outbreaks, etc.).
Serves as co-chairperson of the MCS Wellness Committee.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (School Nurse):
Provide school health education and instruction for students
Encourage good nutrition
Define & implement emergency care for accidents
Implement emergency care for illness
Document student encounters
Perform health assessments
Provide health counseling
Administer medication
Identify and manage chronic health problems
Recognize and support abused adolescents
Assess and facilitate special education needs
Promote dropout prevention programs
Obtains a health history
Works with the Principal to articulate and promote the school system’s vision of learning and teaching
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Provide direct nursing care that includes the ongoing management of students with chronic health conditions, administering/supervising medications and monitoring side effects, health assessments, providing health counseling, skilled nursing functions, and administering the appropriate level of first aid as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Mississippi (unrestricted).
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required, Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or related field preferred.
Minimum 5 years nursing experience, with at least two years in school health, pediatrics, public health, or community health.
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
Current CPR/BLS certification (must maintain throughout employment).
Strong knowledge of Mississippi school health laws, FERPA, HIPAA, and medication administration policies.
Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Full-time, 221-day contract aligned with district calendar.
Travel required between district schools.
Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities (trainings, health events, emergency planning).
