BEHAVIOR COUNSELOR
REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Behavioral Health Services
LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 202 days
PAY: HCSD Pay Scale for Counselors
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree in Counseling
Minimum of three years experience as a mental health counselor or school counselor
Valid state certificate endorsed in Guidance (Mississippi Certification Code 436)
Demonstrated understanding of federal and state special laws
Demonstrated understanding of inclusive education and differentiated instruction
Demonstrated understanding of behavior management techniques and methods
Demonstrated understanding of overall MTSS Process as it relates to student behavior
JOB SUMMARY:
To collaborate with educational staff in a team approach to plan, implement, supervise, and monitor effective positive behavioral intervention plans and behavioral intervention programs, as appropriate, designed to meet the needs of students with behavioral challenges.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work side-by-side with teachers to assess students’ needs and to improve student behavior.
Provide functional behavioral assessments
Develop and facilitate the implementation of functional behavioral plans
Facilitate the development of behavior modification plans
Provide school behavior intervention support utilizing the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) model
Consult with psychologists, teachers, and parents
Document program results, maintain accurate records and other required data, prepare and submit reports in a timely manner
Maintain strict student and parent confidentiality
Serve as a resource to provide formal and informal training, guidance, and assistance to students, educators, and parents
Keep current with issues, laws, and regulations regarding positive behavior interventions, special education, educational trends, and other issues related to children with exceptional needs
Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
Assists in the fostering and promotion of a positive school/office climate.
Maintains a professional demeanor during all interactions between colleagues, parents, students, and administration.
