Municipal Judge Pro Tempore
Position is for a Municipal Judge Pro Tempore for the City of Clarksdale, MS.

SUMMARY: Serves as a temporary or substitute judge in the Municipal Court in the absence or unavailability of the Municipal Judge. Has full judicial authority while presiding and is responsible for ensuring due process and appropriate application of the law in municipal court proceedings.

GENERAL PURPOSE: To provide judicial services on a consistent basis, ensuring the continuity of the municipal court’s functions in the absence of the sitting Municipal Judge.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of the Municipal Judge or the Mayor and Board of Commissioners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Preside over arraignments, pre-trial hearings, trials, and sentencing in municipal cases, ensuring due process and proper legal procedure. 2. Interpret and enforce city ordinances, state laws, and applicable legal standards in courtroom proceedings. 3. Rule on the admissibility of evidence, motions, and other legal arguments presented in court. 4. Issue warrants, subpoenas, summonses, and other legal orders in accordance with the law. 5. Determine appropriate fines, penalties, or sanctions upon conviction or admission of guilt. 6. Maintain order in the courtroom and ensure the rights of all participants are upheld. 7. Work closely with the City Attorney, court staff, law enforcement, and other departments to facilitate the administration of justice. 8. Prepare and maintain accurate court records, decisions, and orders. 9. Provide guidance and oversight to court staff regarding judicial procedures and case management.

OTHER DUTIES: 1. Respond to emergency judicial matters outside of regular hours when authorized. 2. Represent the court at meetings or conferences when delegated. 3. Remain current on changes in municipal and criminal law relevant to court functions. 4. Collaborate with community partners on issues relating to public safety, diversion programs, and rehabilitation efforts.
