Major Functions:
Provide direct instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum content areas (instruction in Braille, use of low vision devices, assistive technology, social skills, O & M, career education, activities of daily living, etc.). Provide sequential instruction to individuals with visual impairments in the use of their remaining senses to determine their position within the environment and in techniques for safe movement from one place to another.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Evaluate the learning environment, adapt the curriculum, and communicate the unique needs of students with visual impairments with administrators, professional colleagues, and families.
• Research new methodologies and technology.
• Participate in on-going training opportunities to stay abreast of best practices and new policies specific to the field of visual impairments.
• Maintain updated census on students with visual impairments.
• Complete Functional Vision Assessments and Learning Media Assessments, as necessary.
• Order APH materials, braille, and large print materials from the Mississippi Instructional Resource Center (MIRC).
• Maintain positive relationship with MIRC.
• Requisition and maintain track of material and equipment needed for the classroom.
• Maintain school community relations.
• Collaborate with assistants of the visually impaired.
• Adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics.
• Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all Desoto County Schools’ records.
Orientation & Mobility Specialist
• Coordinate programming, materials, and transportation with administrators, teachers, and the bus shop
• Evaluate, determine eligibility, and develop programs for students needing O & M Services
• Provide instruction that includes but is not limited to:
o Concept Development (body image, spatial, temporal, positional, directional, and environmental)
o Sensory and Motor Development
o Use of residual vision and low vision devices
o Human (sighted) guide techniques
o Cane techniques
o Route Planning
o Problem-solving skills
o Techniques for crossing streets
o Use of public transportation
Minimum Requirements:
TVI – M. ED in Special Education with an emphasis in teaching the Visually Impaired. Praxis Examination. State department of education endorsement in Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments. COMS – university preparation in Orientation & Mobility leading to a M. Ed. or a certification endorsement in Orientation & Mobility. Supervised 350 hour internship by a licensed COMS, ACVREP (Academy of Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals) Certification.
