PATIENT FINANCIAL COUNSELOR
CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK:
The Patient Financial Counselor is responsible for proactively managing the patient responsibility portion of Accounts Receivable via the surgery schedules. This position will proactively work with patients to perform the following: benefits investigation, educate patients on their benefit plan, collect pre-payments, and monitor/collect outstanding balances to minimize outstanding accounts receivable balances.
EXPERIENCE / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
Graduate of four-year high school or equivalent (GED).
Experience:
Two years in similar position desired.
MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS:
Requires working knowledge of common office computer programs such as, Word, Excel, Internet
Must have complete understanding of insurance benefits
Ability to read and provide explanation of benefits form from insurance carriers
Educate patients on their individual benefit plan, company financial policy, and financial expectations.
Must be able to work independently and multitask
Communicates effectively and assertively while demonstrating empathy for patient’s individual situation
Excellent customer service skills
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintain complete understanding of the company financial policy.
Communicate terms of financial policy to patients for full comprehension of payment expectations.
Requires expert level of knowledge in insurance benefits, coordination of benefits, insurance verification, benefits investigation, and payer network participation.
Successfully obtain estimated patient responsibility for all Mississippi Sports Medicine providers and the ambulatory surgical center.
Communicate estimated responsibility to patients and collect patient’s portion of the claim.
Collaboratively work with the billing department and front desk staff to ensure complete understanding of patient’s financial plan.
Maintain Point of Service Collections for patient outstanding balances.
Setup payment plans, within practice guidelines, for patients unable to pay balance in full.
Responsible for taking payments for Mississippi Sports Medicine and the ambulatory surgical center.
Document all patient payment arrangements and communicate to clinical staff
