This is a supervisory position responsible for skilled, semi-skilled, maintenance laborers, equipment operators, and laborers involved in the construction, installation, maintenance, and renovation of public properties and infrastructure. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Leads a crew of subordinates involved in the maintenance, repair, and renovation of public properties including streets, right of ways, medians, ditches, storm inlets and other related city infrastructure. Obtains work orders; calculates and initiates requisitions for needed, materials, supplies, and equipment; drives crew members to different work sites; ensures that proper safety procedures are in place; lays out work and demonstrates the use of materials and equipment; participates in and performs the more difficult tasks of work; completes required forms and reports; coordinates and communicates with adjoining property owners or traveling public; may provide input for budget preparation. Trains employees, assigns, and inspects work assignments, coaches, mentors, and/or counsels employees; may make recommendations for hiring and termination; instructs workers in work methods and procedures.Inspects equipment; performs and schedules preventative maintenance and repairs to equipment; cleans equipment; may make recommendations regarding the purchase of new equipment; maintains an inventory of all materials, supplies, and equipment utilized; transports equipment for needed repairs. Operates various types of equipment such as a tractor, truck, trailer, loader, excavator, computer, jack hammer, traffic safety devices, broom, sledge hammer, and other required equipment, while performing essential functions. Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others, work well as a team, and foster a work environment of safety, efficiency and cooperation. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Street and related public works maintenance and construction; materials, equipment and practices used in street, sewer, storm drain, curb, gutter, concrete and asphalt construction,; engineering plans and specifications. The maintenance characteristics of different types of vehicles, equipment and tools used in public works construction and maintenance. Methods and techniques of leading, training and motivating assigned crews. Modern office equipment, including a computer and applicable software; methods and techniques of scheduling work assignments; standard office procedures, departmental policies, practices and equipment.
